Yesterday I was up early at 7.30am to go on a walk to look for Scarlett macaws.
It was already really hot!
We went to the beach near us and walked along until we got to some almond trees where they like to feed. There were some there and we saw some flying- 13 in all. They are really beautiful and great to see them in the wild! We had to record how many we saw, what they were doing, where they were and if they were flying, which direction. Scarlett Macaws have been endangered in the past due to people taking their eggs and also selling birds abroad. This practice has largely been stopped now and numbers are looking more healthy.
We also saw lots of other birds, sand pipers, black vultures, avocets, a mangrove swallow, a grey heron, besides others. As a fresh stream runs into the sea there are often crocodiles and cayman in the sea, but we didn’t see any. For this reason and because of strong currents, it’s not safe to swim at this beach.
