Whale watching

Yesterday after the exciting night finding the turtle I was up early to get a taxi with 5 of the others to go on a whale watching trip!

We were directed to a boat which was smaller than we imagined – for 12 people. 2 of us went on this , 2 on another, 1 had booked for surf lessons and the other two pottered about the shops and cafes nearby

The boat took off at great speed, bouncing over the waves then veering over to the right and it felt like we were going to tip over – I think the driver was just having a bit of fun with us! As we got out further we saw several other boats in a circle formation which we assumed where a whale was.

As we approached a humpback whale reared up out of the water – it did this a couple of times, then flipped its tail out – it was amazing to see then saw it blowing out of its blowhole. Apparently a mother and baby – and most likely the baby we saw – even though that was huge!

We circled round along with the other boats and caught sight of the whales quite a lot. At one point the baby came really close to our boat and flipped its tail out of the water.

Unfortunately despite taking travel sickness tablets, because we were just bobbing about for ages I felt queasy the whole time which spoilt the enjoyment a bit but I was glad to get to see the whales.

We then set off at speed again to see some caves which are really old. We also saw our Beach from a distance – the one that we patrol at night – it looked pretty long!😳

After this the boat stopped again and we could get off and swim in the ocean. I got off to swim as it was better than staying on board feeling nauseas. It was so warm and relaxing to swim – really lovely – they gave us pineapple and water melon to eat before setting off back to the beach.

It was a good trip but I was relieved to be on dry land again 😏

Note to self….don’t attempt a whale watching trip again 🤔

  1. I’ve been whale watching 2 or 3 times and never saw a whale!! So you’re lucky you got to see one or several. The seasickness wasn’t in vain

    1. Yes they said 95% chance – I think if I hadn’t seen one it would have felt like I went through all that for nothing 😬
