Yesterday it rained a lot

Once it eased off a bit 3 of us ventured to the jungle in wet wear gear to go and change the SD cards in three cameras. These are to see what other wildlife is wandering about during the day and night. I think we got more wet on the inside than on the outside as it was so hot 🥵 Some good footage captured though

I also helped with exhumation of two nests – this sounds grim but it’s actually just getting all the turtles and discarded eggshells etc.

When we got to the hatchery one nest was very much hatched! Several of the baby turtles had escaped the netting around their nest and wandered off in their attempt to find the sea 🌊

We had to count them all into a bucket and see if the number matched with the amount of eggs buried, then dig up all the discarded egg shells and any eggs that hadn’t hatched to reconcile the numbers.

One of the interns here had the unpleasant job of opening the unhatched eggs – some of which were rotten, a couple which had dead embryos and one had a turtle that was alive but not quite ready to hatch so he was kept inside his egg in a bucket of sand and kept safe for a few more days until he was ready. All this information is recorded.

We did this with a 2nd nest and these turtles had only just hatched so we’re very sleepy 😴

After all that we then measured and weighed 10 from each nest – then they were ready for release.
