Public Turtle Release

Yesterday after the time at the waterfall, we heard that 2 nests of turtles had hatched during the afternoon so some of us went to Hermosa Beach to release the turtles.

We always release the babies back to the beach their eggs were laid on. In this case the eggs were found at Hermosa then were brought to the Reserve for incubating – these 2 nests ended up hatching at the same time!

We seem to have a lot of nests hatching out at present – sometimes 2 or 3 at the same time.

187 Turtles from 2 nests

For this release there were lots of people on the beach who wanted to watch.

Cycy told us how we were going to do it and she drew a big semi-circle on the sand and all the public had to stand behind it. She explained to the public in English & Spanish what would happen.

Some of us had the buckets of turtles to show people and some of us took an individual turtle round to show people. I had an individual one.

Then we tipped the buckets out onto the sand so that the turtles could walk to the sea. People gave us their cameras/ phones to take photos and videos for them so that they all stayed behind the line. Those of us with gloves also moved any turtles that were straying off in the wrong direction. Of course some of the humans also strayed off in the wrong direction!

I never get tired of watching these little guys and girls on their way to the sea ❤️

Selfie with a turtle baby ❤️

This little one was so cute – he was holding onto one of my fingers with one flipper and waving to everyone with the other.

Excuse my appearance in the photo as when you have been in the water and humidity constantly there’s no hope of looking half- decent! But the turtle looks very cute anyway 🥰

And then a bonus – another stormy sunset – this time on Hamosa Beach. A sunset picture never gets old.
