Today was my day off and I hadn’t booked anything to do so I decided to share a taxi with Josefine & Rachel who were going surfing so that I could maybe look round Uvita – a small town.
When we arrived at the surf school a gale was blowing and it was raining hard. The surf lesson was still going ahead unless there was lightning.
So I went for a walk to find the town in the rain. It hasn’t really rained in the morning here, but at least it was cooler; For once instead of being soaked with sweat I was soaked with rain!

I saw some birds and some hotels and houses but didn’t really make it into the main town. On my way back to the surf school I stopped at a nice little cafe for a drink and got chatting to a young American girl who said she was moving here and had found a place to live. I told her what I was doing here and she was interested in the reserve.

There were some nice houses and hotels here but most houses are basic with corrugated metal roofs.

I also went into a church as I heard them singing – I sat at the back. Everyone was pristinely dressed and I looked like a drowned rat with mud up my legs from walking on the wet road. I stayed for 10 mins or so but it was all in Spanish and not much more singing so I left.
It was nice to do a bit of exploring on my own and see some of Costa Rican life. Their motto is Pura Vida – pure life, and on the whole Costa Ricans are very contented- not chasing after materialistic things – maybe it will change in time, and maybe it is different in San Jose, but for now it is a simple life here. If it wasn’t for the humidity and bugs it would be perfect.
Later I met Josefine & Rachel back at the surf school and we went back to the cafe for lunch. They had Burritos and I had chicken rice and salad – so nice, and the cafe had a great vibe.

So I have just over a week to go now.
At first I thought maybe 2 weeks would have been enough, but actually I’m now getting into the swing of things and coping better with the humidity etc so I think I’m going to enjoy this last week and make the most of it. Planning to book a horse riding tour of the rainforest next weekend so that will make a nice conclusion to my trip.
